When it comes to choosing food, it should be REAL and by Real I mean whole, natural- from the earth, unprocessed, unrefined and non-GMO. Your first choice really should be Local & Organic. Then, you can choose between locally produced or organically imported. The further your food travels, the less you can really know about its production, processing, treatment and true adhering to the organic regulations. There is also the environmental impact to consider when carting food around the globe in planes, trains and automobiles. There are shortcomings to the organic certification system, it’s far from a perfect model.
To make things easy, what I always suggest to my clients and the best thing you can do for yourself and your family, is to go to the source. Meet your farmer, see where your food is grown, ask questions. Growing food is an art and those who do, are passionate and LOVE what they do. Ask an artist to tell you about their art… A farmer who loves the land and their hard-work will have no trouble telling you all about their methods and their labour of love.
Some of the best food I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying was grown organically with love and respect, without the ‘Organic’ Certification. Many small farmers grow their food to organic standards or better, but just haven’t decided to go through the certification process. Ultimately, when choosing Organic, you are choosing less poisons, toxins, hormones and harmful eco practices, and receiving more beneficial nutrients, flavour and earth loving sustainability.
Really, there is no reason left to buy low quality, mass produced flavourless food or ‘food-like’ substances heavily marketed by big box companies. The irony is, most of the big name CEO’s and executives wouldn’t touch their own products that they push on the masses… even if you paid them 😉
